Activities
Cape Coral offers numerous leisure activities, sights to see and things to do for your exciting stay in Florida. The whole family can enjoy a day at the Sunsplash Family Waterpark with its 14 different pools and waterslides. Well worth a visit is the Shell Factory & Nature Park, housing the world's largest collection of exotic shells. More than five million shells can be found here, as well as a Botanical Garden and a playground with rides for kids.
Culture and history buffs may want to stop by both the Cape Coral Historical Museum and the Ford & Edison Winter Estates in the historic district of Fort Myers. Inventor Thomas Edison and automobile pioneer Henry Ford appreciated the caribbean flair of the region early on.
Those who find boats and harbors fascinating should not miss the marinas at Cape Harbour and Tarpon Point in Cape Coral, which can be counted among the most beautiful marinas in SW Florida.
A trip to the picturesque islands of Sanibel and Captiva is of course a must, but the lesser known Pine Island is also worth visiting. On the way to St. James City and Bokeelia you'll pass by numerous citrus and palm tree nurseries. The abundance of restaurants on this island allow you to end the day with a great meal.
The region offers quite a few nature preserves and protected areas. Nature lovers can visit the Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, the Manatee Park, Cape Coral's Rotary Park and the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel. In order to experience SW Florida's unique environment up close, rent a kayak at Manatee Park or book a guided kayak tour. Airboat tours allow you to explore the heart of the Everglades.
From Cape Coral, several cities and points of interest can be reached within 3 hours by car or less. Heading south, I-75 takes you to Miami in about 2 hrs, or going north for about the same amount of time to Sarasota, the culture capital of Florida. The scenic islands Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island are also about 2 hrs away. And you can reach Disney World in approx. 3.5 hrs. If you are looking for something upscale, drive down to Naples. Spectacular mansions and expansive parks invite visitors to take a stroll and stay a while in this beautiful city.
