The foundation of Cape Coral dates back to the year 1957. After the brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen had bought the land for $ 678,000 in 1957, they founded the "Gulf American Land Corporation" to develop the 266 square kilometers. They dug canals to dry the area, the land was crisscrossed with hundreds of miles of canals. After the development was finished, the plots were offered for sale with a huge promotional effort (TV spots, newspaper ads and brochures). The development company even bought a travel agency and a charter airline with 15 aircraft, to fly the prospects at a reasonable price to Florida.

In 1958 the first homes were built and the town grew rapidly. The Rose brothers sold promptly 350,000 plots. During that time, the price for a lot on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River was between $3,000 and $5,000. Nowadays you have to invest between $650,000 to $950,000 for a riverfront lot - the trend is increasing. Even today you can see well maintained homes of the early sixties located in the stunning old Yacht Club area in Southeast of Cape Coral.
